Fears

Fear of flying

 20 year old female presented with the fear of flying, in particular with long haul flights. It only took 3 sessions to prepare her for a 3 month long haul holiday. In her words,

 

My fear of flying didn't begin until I was a teenager; I wasn't completely sure what had made me so afraid but the feeling that I would get during take-off and turbulence made me feel very uncomfortable. Every time that I would get on a plane over the next few years I seemed to be reacting worse and worse to this fear, until I got to the point where I would get very tearful and not be able to relax, I couldn't even get out of my seat during the flight and could never calm down enough to be able to go to sleep. I finally decided that I needed to get help when I had made plans to go travelling with a friend. I knew that I would be on long-haul flights and I didn't want my fear of flying to worry or bother me during my months away.

 

I was open to the idea of hypnotism and was recommend to go and see Umesh by my mother who works at the same practice as him. Before I went to my first session I spoke to Umesh on the phone and we spoke about my issue and the different ways that we could try and overcome this fear. I felt very comfortable speaking to Umesh and was looking forward to beginning the process.
I felt a bit apprehensive on my first session as I was not sure whether or not the hypnotism would work on me, but it went very well and I felt very positive about continuing with the course.
Over the next two sessions I had, I began to feel so much better at the thought of flying and no longer had a feeling of dread when thinking about my up-coming flights, I noticed a change in my confidence, and when I talked to people about my travels, the first thing that came to my mind was how exited I was and not how afraid I would be on the flights.


I enjoyed working with Umesh as although it was a difficult thing that I was dealing with, he made me feel relaxed and comfortable and in a way made the sessions seem quite fun.
Also when 1 struggled with some of the things I was being taught (a method of breathing to help relax) he was very patient and didn't try to rush me. In addition to this, Umesh kept in regular contact over email to see how I was getting on and very kindly said that if I ever needed to call him if I felt apprehensive about anything, he would be happy to talk to me.

"I have been on three flights so far (one was 12hours long!) and i was completely fine on all of them. Not scared at all during take off and i could get up and walk around the plane without worrying. I feel so much better about travelling now".
