GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, Michigan — PGA Tour rookie Brian Vranesh came to Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club desperately needing a strong showing in the $5.1-million Buick Open.

In 16 previous tournaments this year, Vranesh made just two cuts for meager earnings of $35,731 to rank 229th on the money list.

But Vranesh went home with the largest paycheck of his career after he cashed $132,600 for an eighth-place tie with four others.

"I can't complain," said Vranesh, 31. "It's the biggest paycheck I've ever made. I'll decompress, fly home for the night, get to see my fiancee and dog and try again in Reno next week."

What was the difference at the Buick Open?

"More putts going in," said Vranesh, who earned a spot on the Tour through Qualifying School last year. "Just the positive mind frame. I've been working with a sports psychologist and he's helped a lot, get the negative thoughts out and will the ball in the hole. It seemed to work.

"I have to do this seven more times. I'm pretty much content on going to Q School. I have a good number on the Nationwide Tour. If I get a chance to play in their Tour championship, you never know."

The highlight of the week for Vranesh came Sunday, when he made back-to-back eagles on the 13th and 14th holes. He made a 17-foot putt at the par-5 13th and a 12-footer at the par-4 14th.

The biggest thing he'll take from Warwick Hills is "knowing that I can compete," Vranesh said. "I played with a great gentleman today, David Duval. I was pretty excited to play with somebody like that and be able to step it up.

"It's a confidence builder."
