If you have high hopes for 2011 and have every intention of making it your greatest year yet, you're probably not among the increasing number of people who say their stress levels are through the roof right now.

According to a survey by the Stroke Association, it's something that's affecting women more than men too, with one in five women compared to one in ten men claiming their stress levels are currently out of control.

Not just that, but it's as if stress is almost becoming the norm, with almost half of everyone quizzed claiming they are under more than moderate stress.

The survey polled 2,000 people in the UK, and according to the Stroke Association its findings are a cause for concern. That's because experts claim stress raises your blood pressure, and that increases your risk of having a stroke - whatever your age.

The survey also discovered that many people don't do enough exercise. Around a fifth of those involved in the survey said they take no exercise at all, with another 20% admitting they only exercise for half an hour once a week.

Experts from the Stroke Association are particularly worried about what the survey reveals about our exercise habits, since regular exercise helps lower the risk of stroke (in fact the survey shows 40% of Brits don't realise there's a link between exercise and stroke). Many researchers also believe exercise helps reduce stress.
