Hypertension

Sometimes Hypertension is known as the 'silent killer', simply because high blood pressure rarely has obvious signs or symptoms.

It’s surprising to learn that around 30% of people in England have high blood pressure but many don't know it. If left untreated, high blood pressure increases your risk of a heart attack or stroke.

So are you at risk?
Your chances of having high blood pressure increase as you get older. There is often no clear cause of high blood pressure but you could have an increased risk if you:

  • are overweight
  • have a relative with high blood pressure
  • eat a lot of salt or eat alot of processed foods
  • don't eat much fresh fruit and vegetables
  • don't do enough exercise
  • drink a lot of alcohol

If you fall into any of those categories, then it’s really important that you see your GP at least once a year for a check-up.
